Chamonix – “Alpine town of the year”

Chamonix has been awarded the status of “Alpine Town Of The Year” by the association “Ville des Alpes de L’Annèe”

Below is an extract from their web-site.

THE ALPINE TOWN OF THE YEAR ASSOCIATION…

Logo … is an association of alpine towns which have been awarded the title of “Alpine Town of the Year”. The title commends an alpine town for its particular commitment to the implementation of the Alpine Convention and is awarded by an international Jury.

On Monday the 1st of September 2014 Chamonix was selected from a long list of potential towns covering the entier Alps.  Selected by an international jury and based largely on Chamonix’s commitment to reduce CO2 emissions by 20% before the end of 2015

Towns previously selected are listed below (Taken from www.villedesalpes.org)

images-12A mountaineer recently discovered a box of hidden treasure on the Glacier des Bossons, He stumbled across the box which contained rubies, emerlands and sapphires while crossing over the Glacier.

The climber decided to hand the jewels over to local authorities after he noticed the jewels were contained in bags with ‘Made in India’ printed on them.

Its not the first time pieces of aircraft have been found on the Glacier des Bossons, in-fact, some local residents frequently find pieces of the stricken Air India plans that crashed on Mont-Blanc in 1950 and 1966.

If no-one claims the jewels they could become the property of the lucky mountaineer, who would then become around €250,000 richer!

Geneva to Chamonix transfers, book early!

imgres-7If your 2013/14 winter holiday is already booked why not get you airport transfer booked too. All too often we receive last minute requests from people who “forgot” to book this vital part of their holiday.

We understand it’s not as much fun as choosing your luxury chalet or buying your new skis online, but without the airport transfer your chalet could be difficult to get too.

At this time of year many of the airport transfer companies are getting ready for the coming winter and have lots of availability, booking now will almost certainly guarantee you availability even over the busy Xmas / New year period.

Police on Mont-Blanc! Going too far?

Policing of the “normal” route and Trois mont-Blanc route on Mont-Blanc will now go tete-rousse-04ahead for this coming summer climbing season 2013.

From June through to September police will be placed on two very popular climbing routes to inform and, when necessary prevent people attempting Mont Blanc.

They will mostly be present in two places: the Col du Midi and the Tete Rousse hut. They are being placed there to educate climbers and give advice for a successful summit attempt. They will look at equipment, peoples fitness, weather and other factors.

The only place where is it permited to bivouac is at the Tête Rousse, where there is a designated camping area.
